Active or Historical? Reading Moisture Correctly

Why a damp reading is not automatically a leak, and how gradients tell the truth.

Every older building contains historical moisture: a repaired leak, a flood, construction water. A single elevated reading cannot tell you whether water is still entering.

Gradients do. Active moisture is highest at the source and decreases outward. Historical moisture is flat or patchy with no logical source. Comparing a suspect area to a known-dry reference turns readings into a story.

That story decides everything: active moisture justifies opening and repairing; historical moisture justifies drying and monitoring. Treating one as the other wastes money in both directions.
